Getting fragrance loads right
Fragrance load — the percentage of fragrance oil relative to wax weight — determines your candle's scent throw. Too little and customers can't smell it. Too much and you risk sweating, poor burn quality, or wasted oil that the wax can't absorb.
Typical recommended loads: soy wax (Golden 464, EcoSoya) handles 6–10%, with 8% being a common starting point. Paraffin wax can take 8–12%. Coconut and rapeseed blends vary — check your supplier's data sheet for the maximum fragrance load.
Fragrance oil is one of the most expensive ingredients in a candle. UK suppliers typically charge £4–12 per 100ml depending on scent complexity. At £8/100ml, the difference between an 8% and a 10% load on a 200g candle is roughly £0.30 per candle — small individually, but it adds up across hundreds of candles per month. Calculating exact quantities per batch avoids both waste and weak scent.
